9 Tenets of Safe Ice Bathing

Ice baths and cold therapy are an amazing way to harness the healing power of Mother Nature, whilst putting your body through a challenging yet rewarding experience. While ice baths are an inherently safe practice, we are bound by duty to make you aware of the following safety procedures before you take on the ice.

1. Those who are pregnant or under the age of 16 should refrain from plunging.

2. If you suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, or another cardiovascular disease, please consult your medical professional prior to plunging.

3. If you're taking any medications that may have a negative effect on vascular circulation, please consult your medical professional prior to plunging.

4. Any skin irritations or rashes should be properly healed prior to going into the ice.

5. If you're feeling feverish or experiencing cold symptoms, skip the plunge until you're feeling better.

6. Don't plunge repeatedly. Your body's core needs time to heat up. Multiple rounds of an ice bath can drastically decrease your body's temperature and give you hypothermia.

7. As in life, length doesn't matter. It's how you use it. Take it step by step and go slowly. Have respect for the cold. Rather than testing how long you can stay in, try seeing how long you can continuously move your body in a short period of time. The longer you go, the closer you can push yourself towards hypothermia.

8. Never drink alcohol, ingest plant medicine, or take any drugs prior to and/or during a plunge.

9. Never plunge alone!
